The ultraviolet and optical spectra of luminous B-type stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud
نویسندگان
چکیده
We present ultraviolet spectra from the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) of 12 early B-type stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), comprising 9 supergiants and 3 giants. A morphological comparison with Galactic analogues is made using archival data from the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE). In general, the intensity of the P Cygni emission in the UV resonance lines is greater, and seen to later spectral types, in the Galactic spectra than in their metal-deficient SMC counterparts; we attribute these effects as most likely arising from weaker stellar winds in the SMC targets, as predicted by radiatively driven wind theory. We also include unpublished STIS observations of two late O-type stars in the SMC. In combination with the B-type observations, and published O-type data, we now have an extensive ultraviolet spectral library of metal-deficient stars, of use in the study of unresolved starbursts and high redshift, star-forming galaxies. In this context, we present empirical measurements for the B-type spectra of the new ‘1978 index’ suggested by Rix et al. as a probe of metallicity in such systems. Terminal velocities of luminous , early - type SMC stars
Ultraviolet spectra from the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) are used to determine terminal velocities for 11 O and B-type giants and supergiants in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) from the Si IV and C IV resonance lines. Using archival data from observations with the Goddard High-Resolution Spectrograph and the InternationalUltraviolet Explorer telescope, terminal velocities are o...
متن کاملSynthetic High-resolution Line Spectra of Star-forming Galaxies below 1200å
We have generated a set of far-ultraviolet stellar libraries using spectra of OB and Wolf-Rayet stars in the Galaxy and the Large and Small Magellanic Cloud. The spectra were collected with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer and cover a wavelength range from 1003.1 to 1182.7 Å at a resolution of 0.127 Å. The libraries extend from the earliest Oto late-O and early-B stars for the Magella...
متن کاملThe Physical Properties and Effective Temperature Scale of O-type Stars as a Function of Metallicity. II. Analysis of 20 More Magellanic Cloud Stars, and Results from the Complete Sample
In order to determine the physical properties of the hottest and most luminous stars, and understand how these properties change as a function of metallicity, we have analyzed HST/UV and high S/N optical spectra of an additional 20 Magellanic Cloud stars, doubling the sample presented in the first paper in this series. Our analysis uses NLTE line-blanketed models that include spherical extensio...
متن کاملDust-induced Systematic Errors in Ultraviolet-derived Star Formation Rates
Rest-frame far-ultraviolet (FUV) luminosities form the ‘backbone’ of our understanding of star formation at all cosmic epochs. These luminosities are typically corrected for dust by assuming that the tight relationship between the UV spectral slopes (β) and the FUV attenuations (AFUV) of starburst galaxies applies for all starforming galaxies. Data from seven independent UV experiments demonstr...

We present new observations of 470 stars using the Fibre Large Array Multi-Element Spectrograph (FLAMES) instrument in fields centered on the clusters NGC 330 and NGC 346 in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), and NGC 2004 and the N11 region in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). A further 14 stars were observed in the N11 and NGC 330 fields using the Ultraviolet and Visual Echelle Spectrograph (UV...
